PREVIEW: Mexico City Grand Prix

With the Formula One season soon ending, the final five races are loaded with possibilities, something we haven’t seen in a sport where domination, not competition, has been the order of things.

Formula One’s fall triple header heads to an exciting location this weekend, as the second race of this three-week racing period goes to the Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit in Mexico City, Mexico, for the Mexico City Grand Prix.

This race has been run for the last few years and has many challenges awaiting drivers. It features a long straight, the area’s high altitude that requires adjusting the engines for the situation that awaits them, and one section that runs through an old baseball stadium.

Then there is the battle for the drivers and team championships between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris. Norris is 57 points behind Verstappen in the driver’s contest, while McLaren is 40 points ahead of Red Bull in the race for the Constructor’s title. Ferarri is only eight points behind Red Bull, aided by its 1-2 finish at the U.S. Grand Prix. If Scuderia can continue success this weekend, it could come down to a three-way battle for the championship.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, a country native, is popular here, and he can redeem himself in front of his home fans. It would be a much-needed turnabout, too. Poor performances increase the odds that he’ll eventually lose his seat.

ESPN2 and ESPNews will televise Friday practices, respectively, with Practice 1 starting at 2:30 PM and Practice 2 beginning at 6 PM.
