Is AHL Right Spot For Kevin Korchinski?

, , ,

The Chicago Blackhawks have sent Kevin Korchinski to the Rockford Icehogs of the AHL. Was it the right move?

Kevin Korchinski played 76 games for the Blackhawks last season, scoring 15 points and finishing with a rough -39. This preseason was a chance for Korchinski to prove his worth to the Blackhawks.

But now it looks like that won’t happen, at least anytime soon. Despite a solid training camp, Korchinski came up short in every preseason game.

However, looking at the demotion from another perspective, Korchinski’s situation in Rockford may offer an opportunity. Several other key Blackhawks prospects, including Artyom Levshunov, will play in Rockford. That defensive pairing will allow Korchinski to develop alongside someone who complements his skill set.

Korchinski will undoubtedly see top-pair minutes in the AHL. If he can find his game and solidify his defense, I expect him to be called up to the Blackhawks.
