Lenoir stands on the brink of greatness.

Despite lacking Pro Bowl accolades, Lenoir’s contributions are becoming increasingly vital, especially following an impressive 2023 season and a training camp that has garnered attention from teammates and coaches. With veterans like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner beside him, Lenoir’s performance has sparked conversations about his potential to emerge as a star in the league.

In the competitive landscape of the NFL, especially at a franchise like the San Francisco 49ers, it’s easy for players without  accolades to fade into the background. However, Lenoir has been carving out a niche for himself, demonstrating that dedication and hard work can lead to greatness. As he enters his fourth and final year on his rookie contract, Lenoir is not just looking to solidify his position; he’s aiming for recognition as one of the league’s elite cornerbacks.

Lenoir’s journey began with a solid foundation at Oregon, where he showcased his abilities and earned multiple All-Pac-12 honors. The 49ers recognized his potential during the 2021 NFL Draft, selecting him with the 172nd overall pick. This decision set the stage for Lenoir to prove he could be a crucial asset for the defense. Initially, he was thrust into action as injuries depleted the cornerback ranks, and while he showed promise, it was a rocky start. He had limited postseason participation in his rookie year, sparking a turning point in his career.

Realizing that physical talent alone wouldn’t suffice in the uber-competitive environment of professional football, Lenoir committed himself to improving his knowledge of the game. The offseason following his rookie season became a transformative period.

Relocating to Arizona provided him was the perfect setting. Dedicated film study allowed him to develop a deeper understanding of defensive strategies. He immersed himself in studying “pro-growth” tape, which highlighted areas needing improvement, while also analyzing the techniques of successful cornerbacks like Jalen Ramsey and Richard Sherman.

This newfound commitment to studying film paid dividends during subsequent seasons. Lenoir learned to anticipate plays by understanding formations and receiver tendencies, shifting from a reliance on pure athleticism to a calculated approach in his game.

A crucial moment in his development occurred during a Week 15 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, where he intercepted a pass intended for Tyler Lockett. That play showcased the skills he had refined through diligent study.

Then he faced a crossroads. As the 2022 season unfolded, Lenoir faced the challenge of adapting to multiple roles within the defense. With K’Waun Williams having departed, the team needed someone versatile to switch between playing inside as a nickel corner and outside on the perimeter, versatility that is rare in the league. Lenoir not only passed the test, he grew more comfortable and his  confidence surged, leading to playoff performances that included multiple interceptions.

Transitioning into 2023, Lenoir’s play was a testament to his continued evolution. Both coaches and teammates noted improved performance as one of the standout players in practice. His exceptional ability to read opposing offenses and his relentless tackling skills have made him a reliable corner and an integral part of the 49ers’ defensive scheme.

Looking ahead, Lenoir’s potential to become a household name hinges on his continued performance. With the looming possibility of free agency at the end of the season, he is not just motivated by financial incentives; instead, he champions a vision of becoming a respected figure in the league, a player whose name resonates with fans and analysts alike.

“I want to be among the top guys in the NFL at my position,” he asserts, and with his work ethic and skill set, there’s ample reason to believe he can achieve this goal. As analysts evaluate the 49ers’ chances in the context of NFL current lines, Lenoir’s performance will likely influence perceptions of the team’s defensive strength.

As the 49ers aim for a Super Bowl run, Lenoir is positioned to play a vital role in their success. He embodies the spirit of determination, proving that with hard work and a commitment to growth, even those perceived as underrated can rise to prominence.

With the 2024 season beginning this week, there is every reason to believe that Lenoir has made the transition from well-kept secret into a player the league can’t ignore.
