“The Playoff,” A Golf Story

, ,

Two players are tied for the best gross score prize at the end of a club’s championship tournament. Arthur is an unassuming 46-year-old architect, and Laurie is a brash 19-year-old assistant accountant.

The club rule requires a sudden-death gross stroke play-off to determine the club champion.

During the playoff, several incidents occur. They involve etiquette, the rules, and how to contend with certain situations on the course. They are explained here, including the sequence of play, the procedure when a ball is lifted to avoid interference off the green, seeking relief from an immovable obstruction, advice on how to play out of thick grass, the most effective way to chip, distance charts, advice on playing from sloping fairways, and the rules governing loose impediments and obstructions.

The playoff lasts for four holes, and Laurie is the eventual winner when Arthur accidentally plays the wrong ball from a greenside bunker and is disqualified. Laurie’s reaction contradicts his character because he has difficulty accepting how he has become the winner.

Golf has myriad rules, and the more we know about them, the better golfers we will become.
