Two players are tied for the best gross score prize at the end of a club’s championship tournament. Arthur is an unassuming 46-year-old architect, and Laurie is a brash 19-year-old assistant accountant.
The club rule requires a sudden-death gross stroke play-off to determine the club champion.
During the playoff, several incidents occur. They involve etiquette, the rules, and how to contend with certain situations on the course. The playoff lasts for four holes, and Laurie is the eventual winner when Arthur accidentally plays the wrong ball from a greenside bunker and is disqualified. Laurie’s reaction contradicts his character because he has difficulty accepting how he has become the winner.
