California’s San Quentin prison holds the roughest prisoners, and there’s a lot of tension among them. Athletics is an area of common interest, and one sport—tennis—seems to be a unifying force.
A tennis court sits in the middle of the yard, and it didn’t take long for inmates to pick up the game and enjoy it.

Tennis became so popular that San Quentin has a tennis team. Earl Wilson, who has been incarcerated since 1985, said, “It gives us a piece of community to get out of prison drudgery. It gives us a sense of family. People love coming in and saying it’s better coming in here because we don’t argue.”
