Ashworth’s appointment as Sporting Director is a wise move.
After several months of speculation, United has now agreed with Newcastle United over a compensation package to secure the 53-year-old’s services. Ashworth, who has been on gardening leave since February, will leave Newcastle United for Old Trafford.

Newcastle United initially demanded a compensation package worth 20 million pounds for Ashworth, which Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe described as “silly.” A deal was eventually struck, but the amount United paid is under wraps. Ashworth will join Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox in the team’s new-look executive suite. Ashworth starts his new job on July 13 and will report to chief executive Berrada.
Ashworth is widely known for his keen understanding of the sport and ability to make sound judgments, especially regarding transfers, developing young talent, and putting together successful squads. He brings a wealth of experience to the Old Trafford hierarchy, and his arrival marks a new era of strategic thinking and expertise in the club’s footballing operations.
Ashworth became prominent for his work at West Brom. There, he delivered two promotions and a top-half Premier League finish. That work led to him being appointed by the England FA. With the England National Team, Ashworth introduced what is known as “the England DNA.” a way of playing across age groups. Then, after the 2018 World Cup, Ashworth left the FA and for Brighton, where he remodeled the team, including securing its status as a Premier League club. Not long after, Ashworth drew interest from Newcastle United, where he identified talented players such as Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes and modernized the club’s operations.
Ashworth brings extensive experience to Old Trafford, which means the Red Devils faithful have plenty to look forward to, especially regarding the ultimate goal of reclaiming their status as a dominant force in English Football. His appointment is a shrewd move in the right direction.
