India won the ICC Cricket T20 World Cup 2024 for the second time, beating South Africa by seven runs.
In the World Cup final, Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first, and India scored 176/7, which is the highest score by any team in a T20 World Cup final. Regardless, in reply, South Africa managed to score 169/8, backed by some of the brilliant batting performances of the Proteas.
A few notable batting performances in the final were given by Virat Kohli (76), Axar Patel (47), Heinrich Klaasen (52), and Quinton de Kock (39). Also, the top bowling performance is produced by Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada, and Keshav Maharaj. The innings of Heinrich Klaasen is the fastest half-century in any T20 World Cup final, and the effort by Quinton de Kock is also worth noting. Jasprit Bumrah was awarded as the Man of the Series in this tournament.
It was India’s first World Cup championship since 2011 and its first major ICC tournament win since capturing the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. But perhaps more importantly, India was the first team to win the T20 World Cup without losing a match.
Virat Kohli, often considered one of the greatest cricket batsmen of the modern era and the Man of the Match of the final, bid adieu to the T20 format, declaring that this was his last T20 match for India.
But the tournament was not just about India. Fans witnessed brilliant efforts by the lower-ranked teams. For instance, after defeating Australia and Bangladesh, Afghanistan qualified for the semi-finals for the first time in history. USA’s performance was noteworthy, too, beating Pakistan in the group stages.
Now, we await the ICC World Cup 2027, which will be hosted in Africa by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
