Those in the know say fans should keep an eye on NFL rookie Ennis Rakestraw Jr., the Mizzou defensive back, who was selected in the second round by Detroit in last month’s NFL Draft. But this story concerns Rakestraw’s relationship with one of his elementary school teachers.
Rakestraw Jr. matriculated at Hastings Elementary School in Duncanville, TX. On the last day of 4th-grade classes, Ennis left a note on the desk of his favorite teacher, Derek Gammon.
The note included a prophecy: “I hope you’re alive because when I make it as a professional player, I will talk about you.”
Gammon, now the principal at Anna May Daulton Elementary in Mansfield, TX, saved the letter. He was also present with Rakestraw Jr., family members, and friends when the young star was drafted late last month. Gammon and Rakestraw Jr. embraced and posed for a photo while holding the letter (shown above).
In a world of such negativity, there are many positives, too. This story is undoubtedly one of them.
