The defending champion LSU Tigers Women’s Basketball Team is having a solid season. With a 4-1 record, there is a chance that we could see the Tigers claim another NCAA Championship. However, there’s a problem, and it’s with their star player, Angel Reese.
Last week, Reese, the star player of the Tigers and a leader during the 2023 season, was benched during the second half of the Tigers’ game against Kent State. It’s been reported that she’s been suspended for having a 2.0 or less grade point average. As a result, there has been some drama over the suspension in the LSU community. Some fans criticize Reese’s lifestyle and others emphasize the struggle to balance academics and athletics at a major university.
I think Reese should resign from the team, at least for now, and focus on her academics. My father always says that you are at university to get a degree and should try as much as possible to concentrate on your studies before doing anything fun, especially sports.
While I acknowledge that Reese might think she has nothing to worry about as she has multiple NIL deals, she needs to understand that those won’t last forever, and the money will stop coming one day. A college degree is a great way to ensure you have a plan if things don’t work out with sports.
For now, let’s hope Reese can get her GPA up soon. Let’s remember that “student” comes first in student-athlete.
