Today (Monday, August 14) is the International Day of Traditional Sports and Games.
The International Day presents an opportunity to celebrate how traditional sports and games unite diverse cultures through shared activities and values. In collaboration with national partners, UNESCO’s International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) acknowledges the legacy of age-old traditions, which foster understanding, unity, and pride in the world’s cultures.
Shammi Rana, ICTSG Secretary General of the ICTSG, believes traditional sports and games create pathways for celebrating historic cultures. Council president Khalil Ahmed Khan agrees. TSG, he says, enables culture-based sporting opportunities for millions of people worldwide.
This year’s observance included the African Traditional Sports and Games Photo Contest. The contest showcased the dynamism associated with cultural heritage across the continent.
