What I Learned as a Beginning Volleyball Player

,

Constant learning is the key.

My first time joining a volleyball team was at school when I was fourteen. I found the game easy to learn once your attention is driven to learning. It took me a couple of weeks to learn the basics, including reception, service, rotation, and some starting rules. And since then, I’m still learning. I learn something new every day and game and through training and team meetings. Learning never ends, even for pro players like Yuji Nishida.

That said, I found being a newbie humiliating, and–if you’re not committed to the game–it is easy to give up. About 80 percent of players will tell you they acquire game knowledge first, including how many players are on the court at one time, players’ roles, and the game’s rules. By rules, I mean the official rules of the game, which in this case come from the FIVB, The Federation for International Volleyball. You can find those rules on the FIVB website.

Once you understand the rules, you can head to a volleyball club as a spectator to watch players and see how officials call a game.

With rules in hand, it’s time to master basic skills like receiving, setting, attack, defense, and service. Start with receiving the ball from a colleague or an opponent. Then head to service, that is, getting the ball over the net. I found that watching YouTube videos helps, too. It also helps enormously if you can secure the services of a coach, especially if you can combine in-person instruction with video presentations of volleyball skills.

Well, there it is! I hope this article has been helpful.
