Mithun Pranav was crowned champion in the Open category at the Deepavali International FIDE Rated Rapid Chess Tournament, held Sunday in Singapore. Pranav also won first place in the Under 09 category.

The tournament, organized by ASEAN CHESS ACADEMY, was conducted on board, and time control for the players was 20 mins for seven rounds of Swiss. This FIDE Rapid tournament saw a varied mix of 53 top-rated and upcoming players.
In events conducted by the Academy, Pranav is the youngest champion to claim the Open category since February of this year. He did so by scoring 6.5 points out of 7 rounds, drawing in one round and winning the rest. The competition included AGM Teoh Yi Hearn Lawrence (Rating 1679), Chia Zhi Kai Aaron (Rating 1132), and Arena International Master Christian Lumapac (Rating 1566).
Pranav also managed to win against his last-round opponent Aquino Wil-Israel. His FIDE rating is 1227, but his performance rating in the tournament amounted to 1619.
