‘Behind the Byline’ — Kadin McElwain

You may have read one or more of Kadin’s articles on TSC. Here’s my take on the person behind the byline.

Kadin R. McElwain was like many kids growing up. He loved sports!

Guys like Kadin ate breakfast as quickly as possible just to get outside and start playing ball. Homework was a roadblock, too, so it had to be done quickly. And the hands-on-the-clock in school couldn’t wind fast enough. Time to get out of class and have fun!

For Kadin, being fast was in his blood. Running became his favorite sport, cross-country, specifically. Running made Kadin jump out of bed each morning and race for the front door. Before turning 16 years young, Kadin had already won two state cross-country championships.

Kadin moved around a lot, too–from New York to Arizona and, now, to Tennessee. And, today, Kadin is a young man with a ton of aspirations. While his feet still move fast, music and writing are also a big part of his life.

Kadin’s push into writing came when his high school team won the state championship. Kadin wrote a poem about the team’s success. He also began writing for The Sports Column, which showed that a fast mind could slow down enough to write passionately about things he loves. And he writes a lot, too–210 articles to date.

I asked Kadin if he could meet persons, alive and since past, who would they be? For starters, Kadin answered as many of us would–Michael Jordan. But his second answer wasn’t a name you’ll hear every day in America. It was Sir Stirling Moss, the notable British Formula 1 driver.

As I said, Kadin likes it fast!

And that’s where Kadin sees the world of sports going–fast and faster. The sporting world will become more virtual, he says–something that will enable sports to be viewed and engaged in new and fascinating ways. But Kadin also knows there’s a downside when sports and speed collide. Kadin believes sports–pro sports, especially–need to a better job of managing drug use and violence.

We’ll no doubt hear a lot more from Kadin R. McElwain in the years to come. His future is as bright and fast as the speed of light.
