Is Chris Gayle as good as he says he is? Well, last weekend Gayle proved again that it’s hard to say no.
In cricket, there isn’t a player any more cocky, even arrogant, as West Indies batsman, Chris Gayle.
Gayle, who at 6’2″ is large in stature, has a confidence level to match. In his book, Six Machine, Gayle wrote: ” I’ve hit balls into stands,” he said. “And I’ve hit balls over stands. I would like to apologize to the owners of the cars I have dented.”
Exaggeration? Perhaps. But there’s no doubt that this batsman is a force to be reckoned with.
That point became clear last weekend when his West Indies team opening the Cricket World Cup against Pakistan. And they reduced their opposition to a lame 105 runs. It might look bias to say that those innings never felt insurmountable to the West Indians–especially with a man of Gayle’s batting prowess–but they were.
In chasing the 105 scoreboards registered by Pakistan, Gayle was dismissed after posting 50 runs off 34 balls–in an inning that saw him break the record for the most sixes in World Cups (37)–a record that was held previously by Ab de Villiers of South Africa and Gayle.
Despite having shared the record, De Villiers played in fewer games (22) to Gayle’s 26. In this game, however, Gayle registered three sixes, which took him to 40 sixes in 27 World Cup matches.
“Ke go ba le magetla.” (“It is on my shoulders.”) Let’s be clear: Gayle doesn’t exaggerate!
