If you haven’t already tackled your fantasy football draft, I’m here to give you the biggest piece of advice that a lot of people tend to ignore in this day and age of fantasy sports.
DO NOT … and I repeat … DO NOT draft a quarterback too early in your draft.
What is too early you ask?
Let me give you an example.
In one of my leagues that I am in, I am in a 14-team non-PPR league with ESPN standard scoring. I worked on filling up my team with a cornucopia of running backs, wide receivers and FLEX players before drafting my quarterback in the ninth round. I even thought about snagging a top-flight kicker like Baltimore’s Justin Tucker or St. Louis’ Greg “The Leg” Zuerlein because I could have and still grabbed the quarterback I ended up handcuffing.
And the quarterback was Matt Schaub.
Now, before you bash me and say how much of an idiot I am for taking the Houston Texans starter as my starting quarterback, hear me out.
First, he is good for roughly 4,000 yards and 22 touchdowns. Not world-beating numbers, but he had those numbers last season with only four touchdowns from his top target wide receiver Andre Johnson. Second, Arian Foster is battling a nagging calf injury and backup running back Ben Tate has taken some carries from the esteemed fantasy player. Yes, it’s a calf injury and he is slated to play in Week 1, but this two-headed monster has opened up the play-action passing game for the former Virginia Cavaliers gunslinger in the past. Plus, if Foster does miss time, the Texans will have to resort to more of an aerial attack this season.Third, DeAndre “Nuke” Hopkins. The former Clemson Tiger is the first guy in Texans franchise history who could legitimately take pressure off of Andre Johnson. Yes, he’s a rookie but his explosiveness and ability to catch the football out of the break could propel the Texans offense to new heights.
My point?
Before you jump the gun and take Tony Romo or Matt Ryan in round 5, look at the grand scheme of a team before you make a drastic decision for your starting lineup.
