The AAF has ceased operations, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate good play. So here are my AAF-A Boys– hardware awarded to the AAF’s best of the best.
Eight weeks of AAF action and, now, it’s all over–the plug pulled, the association dissolved. Many thought the season was a disappointment–from gameplay to game ratings to stadium attendance. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t standout players, teams, coaches, and franchises. There were! So here, fans, are Mikey’s ‘AAF-a-Boys.’
Best Team: Orlando Apollos (7-1)
The Apollos had the best record in the league and were the AAF’s best team. They led the league in most yards (3,109 in eight games). Quarterback play had a lot to do with that. Garrett Gilbert showed why he’s an NFL-calibre player, and his go-to guy, Charles Johnson, led the league in receiving (687 yards). Those two were the best one-two punch in the league. The Apollos are my choice for ‘Champions of the AAF.’
MVP/Offensive Player: Garrett Gilbert, Orlando Apollos, QB
Gilbert went 157-259 for 2,152 yards and 13 TDs. He threw three picks in eight games. Gilbert showed poise in the pocket, made good decisions, and made all the throws you’d want an NFL quarterback to make. He should be back in The Show!
Defensive Player of the Year: Damontre Moore, San Diego Fleet, DE
Damontre Moore was a force on the defensive side of the ball. He recorded seven total sacks, 20 tackles, and forced one fumble. I think he should get an NFL call-up. Moore would add depth to any roster in the league.
Coach of the Year: Steve Spurrier, Orlando Apollos
Just four years removed from coaching at the University of South Caroline, Spurrier showed why “The Old ‘Ball Coach” still knows how to win. He had one hell of a season–the best offense in the league and the third-ranked defense. Spurrier may have had the best talent in the league, but he still coached them up and connected players like he always has. Steve Spurrier is my Coach of the Year … and there wasn’t a close second.
Best Fans: San Antonio Commanders
The Alamodome was the place to be for home games. An average of 28k+ fans came out to see their Commanders (News4Sanantonio.com). And they were ready for football, too, loud and excited.
Farewell, AAF! This fan will miss you.
