While the Terrapins, lead by their head coach Randy Edsall, had a great offseason, things started going downhill when the starting quarterback, C.J Brown, tore his ACL. Due to the wave of injuries that have crippled this team, seven freshmen started in the season-opener against William and Mary, somehow managing to win by 1-point. Fans were once implored to give Edsall a chance at coaching this team, however, it is highly unlikely that Edsall can lead Maryland to topping the ACC because of the lack of players he has to work with.
Scoring only one touchdown against William and Mary is no way for Maryland to make headlines; they would be better off making the highly recruited WR, Stefon Diggs, as the quarterback for the rest of the season. Lacking veterans, Maryland will be lucky to repeat last season’s record of 2-10, as their success will fail to be measured by records and statistics. Judgment upon this team will ultimately depend on the freshmen quarterbacks, Perry Hills and Caleb Rowe, and their progress when it comes to decision making and leadership abilities. Judgment could also be placed depending on a review of Stefon Diggs, and if Maryland’s young defense will stand against the ACC powerhouses of Clemson and Florida State.
Perhaps within a season or two, with their young foundation of athletic talent, Maryland will compete for the ACC title. However, this year is by no means, Maryland’s year to shine; getting even close to .500 this season would be a miracle in itself. Football at College Park this year is bound to be depressing, but any diehard fan can enjoy the small improvements this Maryland team will make that will ultimately make them a powerhouse in the future.
