$765 million, the largest deal in professional sports history. Worth it? Absolutely not!
I may be biased because I’m a Yankee fan, and I’m sure I would feel different if I were a Mets fan. I’m talking about Juan Soto deciding to spend what will most likely be the rest of his career with the New York Mets. In my opinion, it is a massive overpay.
I’m not one of those fans who say that Soto is dead to me. Sure, I feel a little betrayed, but it was his decision in the end, and he is not obliged to show loyalty toward us.
Inarguably. Soto had an outstanding year with the Yankees and was an MVP candidate. However, $765 million for one baseball player is not worth it. With that money, the Mets could have signed four or five relatively big names for the same price. That is also why I believe this move could benefit the Yankees. There are some gaping holes in the NYY’s lineup, and now, with all this extra money, we can fill those gaps.
That brings me to my final point. I don’t like the direction of Major League Baseball. Spending that much money on one guy is ridiculous. You can’t win a World Series with just a few superstars; you need a complete team, which the Yankees didn’t have in 2024, but the Dodgers did.
When I look at the Dodgers’ lineup, I still believe it is better than the Yankees or even the Mets with Soto. It takes a complete team to win a World Series—pitching, hitting, and defense—which is something the Mets and even the Yankees don’t seem to understand.
