Whenever I think about what it means to say “True Love,” I think about the 2016 Rio Olympics and what happened there.
Disney has conditioned us to think that “True Love comes from Romantic Love.” It does happen sometimes. However, true Love comes in many other forms. For instance, True Love can come from your cat or dog, True Love comes from God, and True Love can sometimes come from a good mother or a good dad.
The Disney story Frozen gives us a glimpse of True Love. When Anna is cursed and becomes frozen, the antidote is a true love’s kiss. When Elsa offers Anna a proper love kiss, the curse is broken, and Anna comes back to life.
We all expected a guy to kiss Anna and break the curse, like in Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. But to our surprise, the kiss that broke the curse was Elsa’s kiss of her sister. True Love can also come from a sister or a brother. How beautiful it is when siblings and family genuinely love each other!
Remember how two brothers competed at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games? Jonny Brownlee held a good lead, with Alistair trailing him and Henri Schoeman close behind. With 500 meters to go–and just as Jonny came around the corner–the heat overwhelmed Jonny’s pace, and he slowed to the point of collapsing.
When Alistair got closer, he saw his dehydrated younger brother unable to finish the race. Then, without a second thought, Alistair ran toward Jonny, threw his brother’s arm around his neck, and half-carried him to the finish line. That act of True Love cost Alistair a chance at the grand prize, allowing Schoeman to win the race. Moreover, this brother gave up a $30,000 grand prize to help his younger brother!! How many brothers would do that for their siblings?
You may have lost the Olympics, Alistair, but you won the Heavens!
It tears my eyes to know that the world still has a few good people left. It is nice to know that some families still have True Love.
