Holy Nick Saban! Who saw this coming?
As a die-hard Texas Longhorns fan, I’ve spent years smirking when Oklahoma stumbles, relishing their struggles as any good rival would. The Red River rivalry runs deep, and the history between Texas and Oklahoma is one of college football’s most storied feuds.
Yet, on this Saturday night, I was in unfamiliar territory—cheering for the Sooners.
It was a daunting challenge for OU, facing the Alabama Crimson Tide as a two-touchdown underdog. But the Sooners not only won, they delivered a head-turning performance.
For one thing, Oklahoma has faltered at the line of scrimmage all season long, struggling to establish dominance in the trenches. However, that narrative flipped against Alabama. The offensive line opened holes, the defense swarmed, and the Crimson Tide appeared stunned. For the first time in 2024, Oklahoma looked like a team on a mission.
Alabama seemed to enter Norman expecting a victory, but the team left with its playoff hopes and reputation in tatters. Thinking that the nightmare in Nashville was behind them, the Tide and its fans must grapple with another unexpected road loss.
With a statement win, the question now in Norman is straightforward: How good is this OU team? If nothing else, the now bowl-eligible Sooners reminded fans why Oklahoma football is synonymous with resilience and tradition. With 28 seconds left on the clock, OU fans poured onto the field, a scene that recalled glory days of times past, reminiscent of historic home wins against the hated Cornhuskers.
After weeks of inconsistency, Oklahoma delivered a performance that reminded everyone of what this program can do when it finds its footing.
As much as it pains me to admit it, congratulations are in order. For fans who have felt the sting of disappointment this season, Saturday night was a shot in the arm, a reason to believe once again in that elusive “Sooner Magic.”
The rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma will always be fierce, and the Burnt Orange in me will never root for the Crimson and Cream for long. But on this night, I watched OU defy the odds and take down one of college football’s most dominant programs. Even I couldn’t help but cheer.
For one night, at least, the magic was real. And, for that, I take off my hat to the Sooners!
