Coach Koch Will Be Remembered

, ,

Head Football Coach Gary Koch of Houston’s Memorial High Mustangs in Houston will retire at the end of the 2024 season.

Coach Koch has served Memorial for over 30 years as athletic director and head football coach. I was one of his players, and some of my most cherished memories came from playing for Coach Koch and the Mustangs.

Coach Koch is among the 20 winningest coaches in Texas high school football, with just shy of 200 career wins. His name is also on the Greater Houston Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

Above all, Coach Koch worked tirelessly to ensure that Memorial student-athletes could compete at the highest level. He trained us to be the best and ensured that we learned important life lessons. Any athlete would be lucky to play for a man like Coach Koch.

I benefitted from his guidance. I graduated from Texas Tech, became a coach in Austin, have written books and short films, and won accolades. I credit all of this to Coach Koch and the Memorial community.

Thank you, Coach Koch! Your players and the broader Mustang community will never forget you!
