The Olympics, Living The American Dream

,

Purpose and pride before our eyes.

The images are endless: an Olympic athlete winning a medal and draping the American flag over their shoulders in pride. For the American Olympic athlete, that is what dreams are made of.

Watching the 2024 Paris Summer Games exemplifies what it means to live the Olympic American dream.

For many, their Olympic dream began as a young child, honing their craft in the sports of their choice — gymnastics, track and field, cycling, and so on. Being the best athlete in any Olympic sport takes patience, practice, and time. Standing on the podium and receiving an Olympic medal is an achievement.

Many athletes have sacrificed a lot to make it to the Olympics, but winning a medal—gold or silver—reaps the rewards. From sponsorship opportunities to being financially set for life, it is the benefit of being an Olympic champion for some.

Former Olympic speed skater Eric Heiden, who won five gold medals at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, is a perfect example of living the American dream. After his Olympic career was over, he went on to Stanford University Medical School and became an orthopedic surgeon. He even continued as the team physician for the Olympic speed skating and various sports teams.

It takes hard work to be successful. It takes pride and love of the United States to drape the flag over one’s shoulders. Not only that, but it’s something every American should strive for.
