Suni Lee’s Incredible Comeback

, , ,

Don’t be surprised if Hollywood makes a feature film about her.

Sunisa (Suni) Lee, an Olympic champion, won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and was considered one of the top gymnasts in the world at the time. She participated on the Auburn University gymnastics team and found that her Olympic triumph brought celebrity status and adulation.

Then, things changed dramatically.

One morning, she awakened to find a vision of herself drastically different from the night before. Her face and legs were swollen, and she couldn’t bend her knees. When Lee got on her scale, it showed that she had gained ten pounds … overnight. Physicians told her that she had a rare and incurable kidney disease and that she would never do gymnastics again.

But Suni Lee was undeterred. In late 2022, Lee started training for the 2024 Paris Olympics. But she found that things would be more complicated than she had expected. It was like starting from the beginning. Still, she was determined to do what needed to be done to make the team.

She succeeded! She made the team and competed in all-around events at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Team USA won gold, and Suni Lee won bronze individually.

Inspiration is spelled “Suni Lee.”
