State of Texas-Affiliated Athletes Excel at the Summer Olympics

And how about those Longhorns?!

What do Olympians like Simone Biles, Sha’Carri Richardson, Avery Skinner, Gabby Thomas, and Brittney Griner have in common? They are all from Texas or trained in the Lone Star State.

Affiliation with the University of Texas stood out. UT affiliates accounted for sixteen medals. That performance would have ranked Texas-Austin in 15th place overall with six golds, seven silvers, and three bronzes. That’s nothing new either. Historically, Texas athletes have earned 178 medals representing 38 countries, including 98 gold medals.

This year, Ryan Crouser earned gold in the shot put, Julien Alfred in the 100-meter sprint and gold, and Tara Davis-Woodhall in the long jump. Scottie Scheffler, who graduated from UT in 2018, became the first American man to win gold in men’s golf. Simone Biles won three golds and one silver. Jordan Chiles, who trained in Texas, won the team gymnastics gold. Then, there’s Kevin Durant. The former Longhorn star basketball player earned his fourth gold medal in the summer Olympics with Team USA basketball.

If that’s not domination, I don’t know what is! I look forward to seeing what Texas athletes can do at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
