Marshall Zackary, Track Inspiration and More

,

Zackary illustrates why paralympic athletes are inspirations. It’s not only because of what they do but also who they are.

One of these athletes is track star Marshall Zackary. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was two years old, Zackary has still managed to break records on the track and finished in the top ten in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, respectively.

I sat down with this inspiration to discuss disabilities in the sports world, inclusion, and his career.

McElwain: Thanks for joining me today. You are indeed an inspiration. My first question is to describe running in one word.

Zackary: Unpredictable. I chose this because you can have good and bad running days. But every day, there is a new challenge to overcome.

McElwain: What are the top three highlights of your career so far?

Zackary: I’d say setting two American records in my classification, making the Tokyo Paralympic team, and being able to give back to my community every Christmas.

McElwain: What do you hope to gain for the disability community?

Zackary: There needs to be more awareness of the Paralympics and an opportunity to show young kids with disabilities that they can do anything they set their minds on. All it takes is hard work and believing in themselves.

McElwain: How do you think the sports world should better approach people with disabilities?

Zackary: We do the same things that everyone else does. We need a few accommodations. Due to our disability, we work just as hard as any able-bodied athletic person, if not more. But at the end of the day, we are here just as anyone else because of our love of our sport.

McElwain: What’s your advice for anyone wanting to get into sports?

Zackary: Understand that it is going to be a proper grind. You will have good days and bad days.

Everything will work out if you stay motivated, train, and stay positive. Most importantly, have fun because you should always aspire to do something you genuinely enjoy.

McElwain: Where do you see diversity initiatives in the sports world going in 30 years?

Zackary: I see it getting more awareness and recognition. Many people get the Special Olympics and the Paralympics, which are often lumped into the same category but are entirely different.

When I go overseas, I see just how big the Paralympics are, and the same recognition I receive over there is the recognition I want for the United States.

McElwain: Are there any athletes that have inspired you during your career?

Zackary: As a young kid, I watched Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay, and Usain Bolt. Watching them made me want to run like them. As I got older and started my running journey, I was in the same stadium as them in 2017. I was so excited and proud that I reached the same level as my inspirations.

McElwain: Where do you see yourself in 30 years?

Zackary: I am retired and living life after track and field. I would still be working as a personal trainer and would love to eventually coach the Paralympics.

McElwain: Describe the importance of diversity initiatives in sports in three words.

Zackary: Accepting, understanding, and patient. By having these three at the forefront, I can see the future of the Paralympics being enhanced and continued for years to come.
