The Annual Congressional Baseball Game

, , ,

The annual game was first played over a century ago.

U.S. Congressional representatives play a baseball game annually. It’s for charity with funds supporting vulnerable children and families in the Washington, DC, area, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and the United States Capital Police Memorial Fund in gratitude to the brave officers at the Republican practice shooting on June 14th, 2017.

Although the charitable effort was launched in 2016, the game has been played since 1909, when Representative John Tener of Pennsylvania, a former professional baseball player, organized it. The game was first covered via radio in 1928. These days, it can be seen on FS1 via FOX Sports.

The game is played today at National Park, where the Washington Nationals play. The Republican players wear red and white, and the Democratic participants wear blue and white. The Republican team leads the series 46-42, and the Democrats won a game by the widest margin, 36-4.

I watched last year’s game and found it to be a fun experience. For one brief moment, everyone put aside their differences for an afternoon of baseball. That’s what sports can do: bring people together.
