It’s iffy whether one of the biggest names in recruiting will remain a Longhorn and, if he does, for how long.
Arch Manning was the top recruiting quarterback, playing high school ball at Isidore Newman (LA), where he set multiple passing records. During his freshman year alone, he was the starting quarterback for Newman’s varsity, threw 34 touchdowns, and was named MaxPreps National Freshman of The Year.
Arch Manning is football royalty; his grandfather is Archie Manning, and his uncles are former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning. Unstoppable in high school, the big question surrounded his college choice. Manning had many offers from which to choose, including SMU, Ole Miss, Clemson, LSU, Alabama, Texas, Georgia, and Virginia. In the end, Manning committed to the Texas Longhorns.
That was then.
Today, the big question is whether he’ll remain at UT. The reason is that Manning plays behind Quinn Ewers, who led the Longhorns to the CFP. Texas will square off Monday night against the Washington Huskies for the right to play in the national championship game on January 8.
We don’t know whether Manning will stick around Austin much longer, but we do know that the Longhorns’s QB room is already down one player. Maalik Murphy entered the transfer portal and will play for the Duke Blue Devils next year.
So, what does this mean for Manning? The rumor in these parts is that Manning will give the Longhorns one more year. If he’s not named the starter or Quinn Ewers returns for his senior year, then Manning will enter the portal. If so, talk is that Manning is high on Nick Saban’s list.
Ewers says he plans to return to Austin next year, but he’s saying that now before the CFP gets underway. So, we’ll likely have to wait and see what early 2024 brings.
