Singapore’s Inaugural International School Team Chess Championship Was A Great Success

The United World College of South East Asia and Go Checkmate Pte Ltd co-organized the event.


The Singapore chess community witnessed a milestone from November 14-16 as the Inaugural International School Team Chess Championship unfolded at UWCSEA East. This landmark event drew over 520 players and featured over 130 teams.

Players in action

Day 1: 9-and-Under: The chess spectacle kicked off with the 9-and-under category, witnessing an enthralling battle of wits. OFS Team 1 emerged victorious, claiming the first-place position, while Tanglin Trust School Team 1 showcased remarkable skills and determination to secure a commendable 2nd place. The Swiss system was implemented with a total of six rounds, each with a time control of 20 minutes.

Day 2: 11-Under:
The stakes rose on the second day with the 11-under category. Yuvabharathi School Team 1 clinched 3rd place, with Global Indian School Team 1 securing 2nd place. The talented OFS Team 1 claimed the first-place honor, underscoring their strategic prowess and resilience. The Swiss system continued with six rounds, each with a time control of 20 minutes.

In the parallel 14-Under: UWCSEA Dover Team 1 secured 3rd place, NLCS Team 1 claimed 2nd place, and the formidable GIIS Team 1 emerged as champions. The Swiss system for this category also comprised six rounds, each with a time control of 20 minutes.

Final Day: 16 Under-and-Above: As the tournament reached its zenith, the 16-under category witnessed intense competition. UWCSEA East Team 1 demonstrated chess mastery, securing 1st place. Global Indian School Team 1 showcased their skills again, finishing in 2nd place, while UWCSEA Dover Team 1 claimed 3rd place. The Swiss system was applied with five rounds, each with a time control of 20 minutes. In the 16 above category, GIIS Team 1 asserted their dominance, securing 1st place. UWCSEA Dover and SJII Team 1 claimed the 2nd and 3rd places, respectively, completing the podium. The Swiss system for this category also comprised five rounds, each with a time control of 20 minutes.

The resounding success of the tournament is credited to the meticulous organization by UWCSEA East and the dedicated efforts of the Go Checkmate team.
