Former MMA fighter Javier “Unbreakable” Baez is back in the news because of the way he recently handed a personal threat. The news prompted me to reach out to him to discuss the incident and to have him reflect on his career. Here’s what I learned.
A knife-wielding man picked the wrong man to attack. As Baez put it, “It was just instinct. I put his belly to the floor, put my knee to his back, and then called the cops.”
The instinct Baez showed that day made him a force to be reckoned with in the ring. He ended his career in 2018 with a 5-2-1 record and a 40% knockout/TKO rate in the ring. Here’s what Biaz had to say about his MMA career.
McElwain: What was your favorite part of your MMA career?
Baez: I would have to say winning.
McElwain: Describe MMA in one word.
Baez: Balls.
McElwain: Who is your biggest MMA influence?
Baez: I would go with Danny Chavez.
McElwain: What’s your advice to anyone wanting to get into MMA?
Baez: Put in much hard work, and do much of it when no one’s watching.
McElwain: What have you been doing since hanging up your gloves?
Baez: I’m currently going to school to become a nurse.
McElwain: Where do you see MMA going in thirty years?
Baez: I really don’t know. The world is crazy these days, so that anything could happen.
McElwain: Where do you see yourself in thirty years?
Baez: I want to be happily living with my wife.
