My Interview with Layla Abdullatif, “The Boxing Beast From The Middle East”

, ,

I’ve been following Layla Abdullatif’s boxing career, and she continues to excel.

The world of boxing has produced loads of talent over the years. Recently we’ve seen Conor McGregor of Ireland and Tommy Fury of England come on the scene.  That said, no star is as unique as Layla Abdullatif of Cyprus. She has already won two European Championships, plus earned bronze and silver medals. She is currently training for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

I interviewed her in 2021, and this is what I learned.

McElwain: My first question for you is, who is your boxing inspiration?

Abdullatif: My favorite boxer is Roy Jones Jr. because he has a very good technique and style of boxing. He fights smart, too.

McElwain: What was your favorite competition?

Abdullatif: It was in the EUBC European Championship Junior 2021 when I won the title. I had improved my technique, and I think the final vs. Schinina Graziella (Italy) was one of the best fights in the competition. (Editor: See a clip of the fight below.)

McElwain: What is some advice that you would give any aspiring boxer?

Abdullatif: Work hard. You will get what you dream of.

McElwain: What is one word that you would use to describe boxing?

Abdullatif: Life. I mean, as in “no boxing,” no life!

McElwain: What will combat sports be like in thirty years?

Abdullatif: I think it will remain the same.

McElwain: What are your career goals?

Abdullatif: I want to win Olympic gold. I want to make history; Cyprus has never won a gold medal.

McElwain: What’s your opinion on Jake Paul?

Abdullatif: Jake Paul is not a bad boxer but not the best. I don’t like him either because he doesn’t show respect. People need to respect everybody.

McElwain: Lastly, where do you see yourself in thirty years?

Abdullatif: I see myself in the WBC.

There you have it. Let’s follow Layla as she pursues her dream to participate in the 2024 Olympics and win the gold for Cyprus.
