A feel-good story turns sour.
Michael Oher is a former NFL offensive lineman and Super Bowl champion. His is a fascinating story, the subject of The Blind Side (2009), an Oscar-nominated film in the Best Picture category.
The film is about a homeless teen (Oher) who bounces in and out of the school system. Oher meets the Tuohy family, who take him in as his legal guardian–or so thought Touey. In reality, the Tuohy’s chose a conservatorship over legal adoption.
The film version is based on Michael Lewis’s book that includes text on Oher’s life, The Blind Side: Evolution of A Game. Rumors have it that Sean Tuohy, the father, met with Steven Spielberg and Harvey Weinstein about selling Oher’s life rights. And now Oher is suing the Tuohy’s for not getting his share of the film’s royalties, contending that they used the conservatorship status to retain profits from a movie that grossed over a third of a billion dollars.
We’ll see where the legal road leads.
I loved the movie. But, it’s sad what’s happening now. I hope everything works out for him. Great article. Thanks for bringing this info out, Matthew Paris
