Competition Stiffens for NC A&T Football Aggies

The North Carolina A&T Aggies are on the move. A longstanding member of the MEAC, A&T then moved to the Big South. The Aggies will play in the new Coastal Athletic Association starting this season.

Now that 2022 starting quarterback Jalen Fowler is taking his shot in the NFL, the North Carolina A&T Aggies are looking at three new contenders to take the helm, including sophs Alston Hooker and Zachary Yeager (296 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs), and incoming player Eli Brickhandler.

Coming off a second-place (4-1) record in the Big South last year, Yeager would get the nod by experience alone. Still, with fall camp just starting, there’s plenty of time for Hooker and Brickhandler to make their case.

No matter who gets the nod to be under center, he will throw to capable pass catchers in Ger-Cari Caldwell (224 yds, 1 TD, 15 catches), who’s a 6’4” transfer from the University of South Carolina, Elijah Bowick (6’2” 205 pounds), and speedster Derrick Brinton II (6’0” 165 lbs). Sophomore running back Wesley Graves (320 yards, 4 TDs) will continue to handle the rushing duties.

One big difference from last year is that the Aggies will be playing in the renamed and expanded Coastal Athletic Association (formerly the Colonial). There, they’ll face a tougher slate of opponents, including Richmond, Villanova, Rhode Island, and Delaware.

The Aggies open the season on Thursday, August 31, at the University of Alabama Birmingham. Kickoff is at 8p, and the game will air on ESPN+.
