I’m especially mindful of the talent-salary tradeoff in picking these five players. That’s what GMs have to consider.
Free Agency is ongoing in the NBA, and superstars were the first to ink contracts. But as we witness every playoff season, role players are a crucial factor for contending teams–often the difference between advancing and going home. That said, here are my top picks by position.
Point Guard: Ayo Dosunmu
Previous season stats: 8.6 PTS, 2.8 REB, 2.6 AST
Dosunmu’s energy and hustle were a great weapon for the Bulls last season. Unfortunately, the Bulls didn’t prioritize signing him until now. So, teams can offer Dosunmu a decent contract and use him as an off-the-bench contributor next season.
Shooting Guard: Svi Mykhailiuk
Previous season stats: 6.9 PTS, 1.7 REB, 1.7 AST
Mikhailiuk is known for his shooting and efficiency but needs to improve defensively. Still, with the right team and game plan, Mykhailiuk is a steal.
Small Forward: Stanley Johnson
Previous season stats: 5.8 PTS, 3.2 REB, 2.2 AST
A former lottery pick and high school stud, we’ve yet to see the talent we expected from Johnson. After his stint in Detroit, Johnson played for multiple teams in what is still the early stages of his career. He’s still young and coachable, and I think he’ll be a good role player on a contending team.
Power forward: JaMychal Green
Previous season stats: 6.4 PTS, 3.6 REB, 0.9 AST
Veteran forward JaMychal Green’s playoff experience will contribute no matter where he eventually lands. He can guard multiple positions and improved his outside shooting while at Golden State. He’ll contribute right away on a second unit by guarding the opposing team’s superstar.
Center: Bismack Biyombo
Previous season stats: 4.3 PTS, 4.3 REB, 1.4 BLK
Another veteran on our list, Biyombo’s defensive intensity and rebounding ability will boost a team’s playoff chances. That’s why I believe having him on a roster is a bargain get.
