The new soccer club is the subject of an HBO documentary.
The Angel City Football Club is based in Los Angeles and plays in the National Women’s Soccer League. Launched in 2020, with its inaugural season last year, the team has many high-profile backers and owners, including Mia Hamm, Eva Longoria, and Serena Williams. The founder and majority owner is Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman.
The club’s ownership is soccer’s largest female-only ownership group. But that’s not its only distinction. Portman wants to challenge other industry norms, so this football call gives players a cut of the income from ticket sales and helps players succeed after soccer. The approach has attracted additional investors–over a hundred to date–including former US Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson.
Calling it “one of the most extraordinary adventures of my life,” Portman’s dream is worth following, and it’s s one reason why HBO decided to produce the docu-series Angel City.
