With seconds left, a player twists, turns, and makes the game-winning shot. It’s the bottom of the ninth, and your favorite player drives in the winning run. There is such a thing as “One Shining Moment.” Indeed, there are many.
Sports figures motivate and inspire. Consider the impact of Michael Jordan and Tom Brady. I saw Michael Jordan play as a kid, and my friends and I wore “Air Jordan” sneakers. Tom Brady may go down as the most unlikely player to become a pro superstar–from a sometimes starter in college to seven NFL championship rings.
Both players were known for their ability to prepare, focus, and achieve greatness. We can follow their lead, too. Doing so gives us something to shoot for and work toward–traits that may be more important today than ever. That’s because loads of distractions get in the way; too much time is spent on things that (in the long run) don’t matter.
Sport is one way to focus attention, occupy one’s mind, teach social and teambuilding skills, develop character, and chase a dream–the dream of doing great things. So, my message to children everywhere is this: instead of playing that video game, throw a ball around with your friends and get involved in organized athletics.
Dream. Participate. Achieve. …and be proud you did.
