Across the country, people learned about the man (not just the player), Damar Hamlin.
On Monday night, tragedy hit TV screens across the country. The Bills were playing the Cincinnati Bengals, and a player collapsed on the field after making a routine tackle. Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin stood up briefly before collapsing on the field. Medical staff rushed to his aid and did Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). The ambulance then came onto the field and took Hamlin to the University of Cincinnati Hospital, where he remains (at the time of this writing) in critical condition.
The national response was heartwarming. People put away their differences and showed unified support, wishing this young man the best and hoping that he pulls through.
How the players responded didn’t surprise me a bit. It’s a brotherhood. To this day, I keep in touch with my old high school teammates. They’ll call me to check in, and I’ll do the same for them. And across the country, people learned about the man (not just the player), Damar Hamlin. He is a great human being, engaged for some time in charitable work focusing primarily on raising money to ensure less advantaged children have gifts for Christmas.
I pray for Damar. The NFL, and indeed the world, needs him.
