Monday’s Warriors-Hawks Game Was An Old-Fashioned Barn Burner

, , ,

That’s the best way to describe it, with two OTs and an extra hour of play, Golden State finally subdued Atlanta, 143-141.

The up-and-down Warriors are up again, having won five games straight to put the team over .500 at 20-18 and with the league’s best home record at 17-2.

Golden State has been short-handed, too, with Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Johnathan Kuminga, James Wiseman, JaMychal Green, and Andre Iguodala unavailable for Monday night’s game. Bench players like Donte DiVincenzo and Ty Jerome have been crucial to the Warriors’ success, and Jordan Poole found himself in the starting five.

The Warriors played a strong first half and led the Hawks by as many as 21 points. However, the lead quickly disappeared as Atlanta dominated the third quarter and then led by as many as nine points. In the final seconds, Klay Thompson hit a three-pointer to send the game into its first overtime. Atlanta scored nine unanswered to begin overtime, but Donte DiVincenzo had his own Klay Thompson moment, hitting a three, to tie the game at the end of the first overtime. Later, Kevon Looney scored the final bucket in the second OT to secure the Warriors’ victory.

Looney’s impressive 20 rebounds, 14 points, and eight assists were crucial in gaining the hard-fought victory. Thompson finished the night with 54 points with ten three-pointers and eight rebounds, and Jordan Poole also had a notable stat line with 28 points, six rebounds, and five assists.

Trae Young led Atlanta with 30 points, seven rebounds, and 14 assists. John Collins and Dejounte Murray were not far behind, with 25 points each. The Hawks suffered their fourth loss in a row and are currently ninth in the East with a 17-20 record.

The Warriors, now ninth in the West, will continue their homestand tonight against the visiting Detroit Pistons.
