Rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña, who hit .400 in the Series, propelled Houston to its second Series title in the last six years.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of MLB 2022 was how Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña replaced legendary Carlos Correra. He did, and he did it with style. Peña was the first rookie to be named MVP in the ALCS, and he repeated that feat by grabbing the Series MVP title. That award came on top of another announcement–that the nifty fielder was named an AL Gold Glove.
But Peña’s awards can’t match the team award that the Astros claimed late Saturday night. Buoyed by a Game 3 no-hitter, the Astros beat the Phillies 4-1 to win baseball’s most cherished title, the World Series Championship.
Houston drafted Pena in the 3rd round back in 2018, and the word was, “this guy is special.” And that word turned out to be true. Peña led American League shortstops this season with 15 defensive runs saved and 2.4 defensive wins.
Let the celebration begin! The Houston Astros are the kings of Major League Baseball … again. And, by the way, the happiest fan of all may be the guy I wrote about a few days ago. “Mattress Mack” is 75 million dollars richer than he was when he woke up Saturday morning.
Wow!
