Mancini survived colon cancer.
Trey Mancini’s nickname is “Boomer.” The Baltimore Orioles selected Mancini in the eighth round of the 2013 MLB draft and he made his MLB debut with the team in 2016. Mancini is now an Astro and made his debut with a “boom” (pun intended). Mancini hit a home run in his first at-bat with Houston to help in a 6-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.
Trey Mancini is also a cancer survivor, diagnosed in 2020 with Stage 3 colon cancer. During Spring Training that year, he decided to have a colonoscopy, hoping his fatigue resulted from gluten intolerance. But colon cancer was the cause, and Mancini underwent surgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore not long after that.
Rather than hit baseballs, now Mancini was in chemotherapy treatment, vowing to return to baseball by Opening Day 2021.
The time in between was stressful, feeling hungover and miserable from the chemo, suffering allergic reactions to meds, sleeping most of the time, and only being able to eat small portions of food. But Mancini made it through the treatment and knew he’d eventually get back on the field. In the meantime, he watched tons of baseball on TV and got lots of support from family, friends, and teammates. Mancini said he missed the brotherhood that comes with being on a team.
Now, he’s heading to his first World Series, and I hope he makes the roster. So far this postseason, he’s hitting .000 in 12 at-bats.
