“Big Shot” was also a big winner, too.
Who is the greatest NBA role player of all time? A lot of fans would answer Steve Kerr. Kerr, now the head coach for the Golden State Warriors, won championships with the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan. There have been many other great role players over the years, too, and this article is about my favorite, Robert Horry, also known as “Big Shot Rob.”
Horry got the name “Big Shot” when he was playing in Houston with the Rockets. Horry could score around the basket, and he could also hit the three-pointer, too, and that made him an ideal go-to player when games were on the line. As a kid, I remember times when the head coach Rudy Tomjanovich would draw up the final play for Horry, and then he’d do the rest. That’s how he got the name “Big Shot.”
Horry could have also carried the nickname “Big Winner.” That’s because (believe it or not) he won more NBA championships (7) than Michael Jordan (6). What’s more, Horry did it with three different teams, the Rockets, Spurs, and Lakers, where he played with three of the greatest centers ever to play the game–Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, and Shaquille O’Neal.
I agree with Tomjanovich when he argues that Robert Horry should be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame.
Big Shot. Big Winner. Robert Horry
I did not know his nickname. However, I did know he won championships with 3 different teams. He definitely played on some great teams. What’s most impressive…is 7 championships…with 3 different teams. He needs to be in the Hall of Fame. This is Definitely a blast from the past. Even though I’m not a fan of Horry, you have to appreciate what he’s accomplished. Excellent article Mr. Paris!
