Are you ready for some football? I am. And here’s a provocative possibility associated with the NYGs of 2011.
With an offensive line ranked thirty-one out of thirty-two. The New York Giants ranked 24th in rushing and 32nd in passing and went on to win Super Bowl XLVI (46) in 2011. An offensive line ranked next to last helped Eli Manning pass for 296 yards and one touchdown on forty attempts for a 103.7 passer rating in SB XLVI.
The once-maligned unit helped New York win the time of possession matchup by fifteen minutes and helped lead the rushing attack of Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, and DJ Ware over the century mark.
Analysts must wonder why we bother with stats. That said, the Giants had the #3-rated defense in sacks with forty-eight, and the 27th overall rated defense earned eleven sacks in their run to their second Super Bowl win since 2007.
For the 2022 preseason, the Giants’ defense again ranks near the bottom of defense in power rankings, about the same position the 2011 Superbowl-winning defense ranked. So, is Daniel Jones the mirror image of Eli?
Jones enters his fourth season with the franchise. The Giants recently retired Eli Manning won Super Bowl XLII (42/ 2007-08 season), the fourth season after the franchise drafted him. Despite the long odds, the Giants’ fanbase expects Jones to lead them to the playoffs and a victory in Super Bowl LVII (57) in Glendale, Arizona, the location Eli Manning won XLII in his fourth season fourteen years ago.
Jones and the other skill players–running back Saquon Barkley, receiver Kadarius Toney, and tight end Daniel Bellinger–execute with an offensive line positioned just inside the top twenty in the league at eighteen.
The Giants’ newly structured unit will need to gel quickly to depart the Tennessee Titans’ Nissan Stadium with a notch in the win column. They visit a Titans team that finished 2021 with a 12-5 regular season record and was the top seed in the AFC playoffs.
The kickoff is at 4:25 pm on Sunday, September 11, in Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
Final Score: Titans 24, Giants 22
