It was a great team with a memorable song.
The 1985 Chicago Bears will go down as one of the best football teams in the history of the NFL, right up there with the 1972 Miami Dolphins. The team had a dominant offense and defense with players like Jim McMahon, Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, and Richard Dent. The Chicago Bears notched a 15-1 record and won the Super Bowl over the New England Patriots, 46-10.
The Bears did something else that year that remains in the memory bank.
Two months ahead of Super Bowl XX, the players recorded a song called The Super Bowl Shuffle. Credited as the Chicago Bears Shufflin’ Crew, the song was released in December 1985 through the Capital Records Red Label imprint. It was a hit, too, reaching #41 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it also earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
A mainstream phenomenon, too, the song sold over 500,000 copies, and millions viewed an accompanying video.
Chicago residents benefitted, too. $300,000-plus in profits were donated to the Chicago Community Trust. The money helped Chicago families in need with clothing, shelter, and food.
NFL 1985: a great team with a memorable song.
LOL! What a fun article! I probably haven’t seen this video since it came out 37 years ago. I’m a big NFL fan. So, I’m very familiar with this Bears season. However, I had no clue about the Grammy nomination and all the other things about this song. Once again Matthew Paris thanks for bringing this light. Great article!
