Sports bring you many benefits, especially for young people. Benefits include friendships, exercise, learning how to be a part of a team, critical thinking, and how to take direction. All these things are vital for youth development, and developing a proper mindset may be the most important of all.
Coaches train young athletes in different ways, and it’s critical to ensure that children get the right kind of coaching, including learning the fundamentals of a sport. Another vital contribution of sport is helping young athletes develop a mindset that includes being able to focus on a task, thinking through situations rapidly and making the appropriate decision, and figuring out how to contribute best in team sports.
As a youth coach, I’ve found that many adolescents and younger athletes have difficulty gaining and maintaining focus. That includes being able to handle winning and losing maturely. I’ve often seen young athletes gloat when they win and say they don’t want to play again when they lose.
I firmly believe that an essential role for coaches and parents is helping young athletes develop a proper mindset.
