Two players accomplish a rare feat and do it in the same game.
What is an Immaculate Inning? In baseball, it’s one inning, nine strikes, and three strikeouts. It’s very tough to accomplish. Once, that is. But what about twice in the same game? Unreal, I’d say. But real, too, thanks to the Houston Astros.
The opponent was their in-state rival, the Texas Rangers. Astros’ starter Luis Garcia was on fire, and he already had a 6-run lead going into the second inning. Then, Garcia struck out Nathaniel Lowe, Ezequiel Duran, and Brad Miller, all in order. He also retired a fourth-straight hitter with a three-pitch strikeout to start the third inning.
Garcia continued for five innings before being removed by manager Dusty Baker. Astros’ reliever Phil Maton came into the game and was, well, immaculate, too, striking out the same three batters– Lowe, Duran, and Miller–that Garcia had done earlier.
What are the odds of that happening? It’s calculated to be about 1%. But Houston pulled it off, making history in the process. Hail, Astros!
