On Wednesday, the younger Clemens made his MLB debut.
Roger Clemens is one of the most recognizable names in Major League Baseball. This 11-time All-Star left a distinguishable mark on the game. Clemens pitched from 1984 to 2007, racking up an incredible array of records and awards along the way, including winning over 350 games and sticking out nearly 4700 batters.
Well, son Kody is following in the family tradition, but not as a hurler. A fielder, the younger Clemens played college ball at Texas, just like his dad.
There, Kody Clemens had a breakout junior year, batting .352 with 23 homers and earning Big 12 Player of the Week honors. In 2018, Clemens was a finalist for two prestigious awards, the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy.
Before that, I had the privilege of watching him play for my high school alma mater, Memorial High in Houston.
Kody was drafted by the Detroit Tigers (79th pick) in the 2018 MLB Draft and was assigned to the minors, making his debut with the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Class A Midwest League. He then worked his way up the Tigers’ system, eventually making it to Detroit’s AAA affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens.
On Tuesday, Clemens got his call-up to “The Show.” Then, on Wednesday, he made his debut, playing left field and going 0-3 in Detroit’s 5-0 win over the Minnesota Twins.
I look forward to seeing what Kody Clemens can do in the majors.
