Tom Brady announced that he’ll return to the NFL. It will be his 23rd season in the league and third with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
His wife, Gisele Bundchen, has wanted her husband to retire, especially after he broke the record for most championship rings by a quarterback. Brady broke the record after he won Super Bowl 51 in Houston. He now has seven rings.
Bundchen’s wish was granted on January 30; Brady announced his retirement. About 40 days later, on March 13, Brady announced he was un-retiring.
So Brady may also be known as the player with the shortest time between retiring and un-retiring. In his Twitter post, Brady said that he is not ready to sit in the stands … at least not yet. But I don’t think that’s the only reason. Brady has one more year in his contract with the Buccaneers. And don’t be surprised if he eventually gets to live his dream by playing in his home state of California. Will the 49ers beckon?
A big part of me thinks he wants to retire with every record within his grasp. Besides, playing football isn’t just what Brady does. It’s his identity.
Time will tell how this story turns out, and Brady will be the one to write that script.
