“The Senior Bowl.” The name rings true with history and prestige, producing opportunities for recognizable and lesser-known names. The 73rd version of the all-star game was held on Saturday in Mobile, AL, and it didn’t disappoint. Here’s my list of five players to watch on NFL Draft Day 2022.
The game is only one part of a big week for players from across the country. A good week can move players up the draft chart, and a bad week can have the opposite impact. That’s because Senior Bowl Week is a mini NFL scouting combine. Scouts descend on Mobile, especially keen on discovering players who have been flying under the radar.
Justin Herbert, Josh Allen, and Deebo Samuel are just a few of the players who have participated in past Senior Bowls and, then, made it big at the next level. Here are five players who may end up occupying the same status.
Malik Willis, Liberty, QB, 6-1, 220 lbs, Willis is coming off a solid two years as the starting quarterback, a dual-threat QB with elite creator skills. He can run and has the arm talent to match his legs. Think of him as a potentially more significant Kyler Murray, the type of skill set NFL teams are looking for. Willis could be the #1 quarterback taken this year.
Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh, QB, 6-3, 220 lbs. Following a stellar year that saw Pickett contend for the Heisman Trophy, Pickett had a solid week of practice and answered questions that needed clarification. Scouts had to come away impressed by his leadership and accuracy. Pickett is squarely in the conversation with Willis to be the first QB taken.
Christian Watson, North Dakota State, WR, 6-4, 211 lbs. Watson is the latest hot prospect from NDSU, an FCS team that has been a steady provider of talent to the NFL. Watson was impressive in Mobile, showing explosive speed, versatility, and solid route-running ability. Coupled with size and playmaking ability, Watson has “Day 2 steal” written all over him.
Trevor Penning, Northern Iowa, OT, 6-7, 340 lbs. Penning came to Mobile under the radar and departed on it. The left tackle from UNI impressed all week with his play at the point of attack and finishing ability, taking on every play with an attitude that coaches love. Look for the Penning name to be called early on draft day; he might end up being a First Round pick.
Boye Mafe, Minnesota, DE, 6-3, 255 lbs. Mafe might be the most overlooked elite-level edge rusher in this year’s draft class. Labeled a ‘freak’ athlete, Mafe has the strength and athletic ability to be an NFL impact player. Boasting a 4.5 40 yard dash and an explosive first step off the line, Mafe showed up all week, turning in a strong performance. Mafe could wind up being one of the biggest steals on Day 2.
Pickett and Mafe all the way
