Fresh off Max Verstappen’s first championship, Red Bull seeks another title in 2022, The Constructors’ Championship.
MILTON KEYNES, England—On Wednesday, Red Bull did what was a long time in coming. #1 will be posted on champion Max Verstappen’s car for the first time in many years. And this year, it will be posted on a redesigned car, the RB 18.
Even with the official withdrawal of its works, Honda remains a private contractor to the Austrian-sponsored team. The Hybrid V-6 engine is now under the name of Red Bull Powertrains. It remains to be seen what the car can accomplish, but much is expected because of Red Bull’s talented aerodynamic designers, which many consider the best in the sport.
The sponsorship of Red Bull–a variety bag last year–won’t be that way in 2022. That’s because Oracle, a San Francisco–based software firm (no newcomer to racing sponsorships, including sponsoring America’s Cup Yacht races), is now Red Bull’s primary sponsor, In fact, the team will now be known officially as Oracle Red Bull Racing.
Verstappen and teammate Sergio Perez return for another season, but the Mexican is primed to challenge for titles this year. “That’s what I’m here for. I prepare myself to be a world champion,” Perez said. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe in myself and if I didn’t work through it. Knowing how this team works and how it operates, just learning every day — it’s what made the difference.”
And Perez and Verstappen are out for more than individual laurels. Red Bull is searching for the Constructors’ Title, which the team lost out to Mercedes last year.
