When Your Alma Mater Wins a Bowl Game

, , ,

The stage was set on Dec. 28th, 2021–the Texas Tech Red Raiders (my school) versus the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Mike Leach had returned to face off against his old team. Drama!

Texas Tech won the game convincingly, 34-7. Tech QB Donovan Smith threw for 252 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown. Tech running back Tahji Brooks rushed for 107 yards and one touchdown, while SaRodorick Thompson ran for another 80 yards and scored for the Red Raiders.

So, what does the future hold for Texas Tech? Interim head coach Sonny Cumbie, a former player for Mike Leach, finished with a 2-3 record. Cumbie took over in October when then-Texas Tech head coach Mike Wells was fired. But Cumbie won’t be in Lubbock next year. He’ll become the head man at Louisiana Tech instead. Joey McGuire, who served previously as the associate head coach/outside linebackers coach at Baylor, will be the head man.

I look forward to seeing Texas Tech do well in the future.
