It’s called free agency, the sports equivalent of a free for all to secure and sign players. Agents serve as the go-between. Usually, the highest bidder wins. Will this be the storyline for what with free agent Carlos Correa? Astros fans want him to stay in Houston.
The circumstance is well represented in the film Moneyball (Columbia Pictures, 2011). It’s the story about Oakland Athletics’ GM Billy Beane and how he was able to compete for players with teams that have more cash to make deals.
That background brings me to today. I’m an Astros fan, and the issue is whether Houston will retain the services of 2021 Golden Glove winner Carlos Correa. A rival, the New York Yankees, is a wealthy franchise with a history of opening its pocketbook when it comes to signing players like Correa, a player they’d like to see in their infield.
The Astros have made Correa an offer. It’s a five-year, $160 million offer, which averages about $32 million a year. Correa and his agent are waiting to see what the other teams are offering.
Local fans have made their preference known. They chanted “Pay Correa!” during the ’21 ALCS and World Series. The fans really want him to stay, but it’s too early to say how this will turn out. At this point, all we can do is hope.
